The technical visit to the Macau Galaxy International Convention Center (GICC), Light Rapid Transit (LRT), and MGM Cotai jointly organized by The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers - Building Services Division (HKIE-BSD) and The Macau Institute of Engineers was successfully held on 14 June 2025 with 27 members joining.
The visit was commenced with the representatives from the GICC leading a tour to the 10,000 sqm pillar-less exhibition hall and the indoor arena with 16,000 seats. Members were able to appreciate the fire safety design for the venues, which comprises special arrangement of fire separation with smoke control system to reduce smoke penetration between areas. Besides, our members were also be introduced the specialized air-conditioning and electrical design for catering various types of show configuration.
The visit was then continue and further focused on the LRT design with the designer presented on the development of the Union Hospital Interchange Station and Seac Pai Van Station. Members gained insights into the stations' design philosophy, which emphasizes innovative, human-centric design and effective way-finding strategies to improve passenger experience. They also introduced the passive building service designs such as static smoke discharge, natural cross ventilation, and natural lighting.
In the afternoon session, members visited the stations to observe how building services integrating with the environmentally sustainable elements. After that, members were led to MGM Cotai for appreciating the operational-driven design of its building services system including the chiller plant optimization and system prediction. The visit was concluded with an insightful discussion on the BS application of the MGM Cotai between the representatives of the MGM and members.
