Programme Highlight:
Although the latest statement on Transition away from Fossil Fuel from COP28 would continuously to drive reduction greenhouse gases over the coming decades, the chance of limiting global warming to 1.5°C (according to the 2023 UN Emission Gap Report published before COP28) is only 14%. Various scenarios leave open a large possibility that global warming would exceed 2°C and even beyond, implying that our facilities and operation systems for buildings and infrastructure need to identify climate risks in more detail, and to examine / reexamine possible climate scenarios to facilitate better adaptation to the negative consequences of global warming.
In Hong Kong, HKEX has already proposed to mandate companies to make climaterelated
disclosure in their ESG (Environmental Social Governance) reports following international framework such as TCFD (Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures) and ISSB (International Sustainability Standards Board), such as to disclose the amount and percentage of assets vulnerable to physical risks and aligned with climaterelated opportunities. These requirements have posed a challenge to the industry.
This Technical Seminar will share the latest insights on how companies can assess and manage physical climate risk and improve resilience across their portfolios and particular sites. Techniques on climate and hazard modelling, and the approach of applying climate science on physical risk assessments and corresponding actions will be shared through cases and examples.
Guest Speakers:
Speaker 1 – Ir Dr Bruce Chong
Ir Dr Bruce Chong is a Fellow and Director of Arup, leading City Advisory, Climate and Urban Sustainability services in East Asia. Bruce has supported international organisations such as the World Bank, IFC, ADB, APEC and EMF on climate adaptation, sustainable infrastructure and circular economy initiatives. He recently launched the Asia Corporate Coalition for Climate Resilience (A4CR), advising businesses in the region on strategies to address climate impacts and future-proof their asset and operations.
Bruce is a fellow of HKIE, CIBSE, ICE and IET, as well as committee members of organisations including the Director of HKGBC, Chairman of Real Estate Working Group in the HKGFA, Committee Member of ESG Group of the Financial Service Development Council (FSDC), Working Group Member on Engineering & Climate Changeof the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) etc, using his expert knowledge to drive cross-sector collaboration, and generate momentum of change for the industry.
Speaker 2 – Dr Homan Wong
Dr. Wong has 15+ years of experience in national level science laboratory, international consultancy and client-side developer. This cross-disciplinary experience enables him to provide climate adaptation consultancy services which require both scientific knowledge in climate change and extreme weather as well as domain knowledge in infrastructure and building planning and construction.
Dr. Wong possesses strong technical skills in system computational modelling, full-stack development, advanced coding skills in Fortran and Python, and full-cycle management in capital works. Dr. Wong is an Associate Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society since 2014.
Speaker 3 – Ir Bob Lau
Bob has over 20 years of experience as a building services engineer. He currently serves as a Director specializing in all aspects of plumbing, drainage, fire protection and natural gas services. He has contributed to his vast knowledge and expertise in finding solutions to intricate plumbing, drainage and fire services designs. Bob plays a key leadership role spearheading the company’s sustainable plumbing design, managing projects, leading design teams, training junior engineers, and developing strong client relationships.
Bob has lived internationally and managed multidisciplinary teams in Asia, USA and UK. He is also the Arup East Asia Leader of the Building Retrofit and Environmental Services Skill Network.
Speaker 4 – Ir Jimmy Li
Jimmy Li is a Director of Arup and is currently leading one of the MEP teams in HK. He has extensive experience in planning, design, project management and contract administration for a variety of projects, including commercial, recreational, residential, in Hong Kong, China, India, Philippine and Singapore. Jimmy plays a key role in pushing the BIM and Digital development in the East Asia region of the company. Jimmy is also one of the Global and East Asia Skill Network Leader of Arup.
