Technical seminar on Quantitative Analysis of Building Carbon

By Ir Jimmy Li

The Webinar on the topic “The Quantitative Analysis Of Building Carbon From An Engineering Perspective” jointly organized by HKIA (Environment and Sustainable Development Committee) and HKIE (Building Services Division) was delivered on 10 Aug 2022. Ir. William Wong, Director of Arup was invited as the speaker. Around 600 members from both institutes participated in the event.
After an introduction of UNSDG, green assessment and certification schemes, Ir William Wong presented the latest local and global development of Whole Carbon Assessment (WLCA). Methodology of WLCA analysis and step-by-step engineering calculation were also elaborated. Ir William Wong further explained the WLCA assessment with case studies of embodied carbon computation of both structural and building services components.
Several international and local WLCA calculation tools and templates were introduced to the audience. Because of the high living standard and very dense population, Ir William Wong pointed out that the operational carbon emission of Hong Kong was extraordinarily high compared to other well-developed international metropolitans. Ir William Wong also suggested that carbon emission from the energy sources, water consumption as well as energy density per unit area in Hong Kong should be taken into account in WLCA for local buildings.
At the end of his presentation, Ir William Wong introduced some engineering tools that could help professionals and developers to explore concepts and options to decarbonize their buildings.
