The Joint Technical Visit to Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) Center in Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital (PYNEH) jointly organized by The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers - Building Services Division (HKIE-BSD) and Biomedical Division (BMD) was successfully conducted on 7 December 2024 with 20 members joining.
The half-day visit to the first HBOT Centre in Healthcare venue in HK was a fruitful one with the focus on the design of medical gas supply system for the hyperbaric oxygen system, and application of hyperbaric chambers for the hyperbaric oxygen treatment. The visit was kick-started by the introduction of the designated medical supply system to the HBOT and members was given a guide tour by Senior Manager of Facility management department and repersentatives of Biomedical engineering team of PYNEH to various medical gas plant room and facilities in the hospital for a detailed appreciation of the system configuration including the system redundancy, pipeline arrangement and the statutory requirement such as the licensing requirement of the DG stores with capacity change and medical gas pipeline modification.
Following the comprehensive introduction of the medical gas supply system, members were led to the HBOT centre for a briefing by Ward manager of HBOT on the application of the multiplace chambers and monoplace hyperbaric chamber for treatment various injury cases such as carbon monoxide poisoning and decompression illness, diabetes, and delayed radiation injuries. To allow better understanding of the chambers, members were able to access the multiple hyperbaric chambers in the visit and their treatment operation were also introduced. The visit was concluded with an insightful discussion on the application of the HBOT centre between the representatives of the hospitals and members.
